Christmas rabbit care from Northlands Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic
It’s soon to be Christmas here in Northamptonshire! That means it’s nearly time to start decorating the house, buying in festive food and wrapping up presents. If you’re a rabbit owner, we recommend you read our advice before you begin.
Northlands Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic’s team of rabbit vets have put together the following tips to follow when it comes to decorating and eating this Christmas, as well as how you can manage your rabbit’s stress levels.
Rabbit safe Christmas decorations
- Christmas trees & lights: A staple in your home, prevent your tree from toppling over by creating a barrier around the tree. Bunnies are often inquisitive and may decide to investigate the tree and associated electrical wires from the Christmas lights. Tree needles can also be incredibly sharp and may harm your rabbit’s paws.
- Tinsel and ornaments: don’t hang anything too low that will attract your rabbit’s attention. Tinsel and decorations can be harmful to your bunny if eaten and may cause intestinal blockages.
Dangerous foods to be aware of
Toxic foods
Alcohol, chocolate, and sweets are toxic to rabbits but are popular food items to have in the house over the Christmas period. Make sure you keep these foods out of your rabbit’s reach and if they do ingest anything they shouldn’t, even a tiny amount, call Northlands Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic immediately on 01604 478888.
Rich foods
Foods rich in sugar, fat and salt can be disruptive to your rabbit’s digestive system so avoid sharing these indulgences with your pet.
Managing the busy Christmas period
Routine
Sticking to your bunny’s routine as closely as possible over Christmas can help reduce their stress levels. Also, supervise any interactions people have with your rabbit. Encourage them to wash their hands before and after to avoid passing on any scents on their hands, and ensure they use gentle and calm handling methods.
Quiet space
Ensure you rabbit has a quiet space to retreat to when needed. This could be in their current living environment or even somewhere new but with familiar bedding and toys. Also, limit visitors where possible or explain to them about your rabbit’s nature and ask them to be quiet and considerate as much as possible.
By taking precautions this Christmas, and being aware of potential hazards, the team at Northlands Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic thinks you should be able to keep your rabbit happy and healthy over the festive season.
